It's finally happened, the first trailer for the highly anticipated adaptation of Little Women has dropped and wow.
First of all, the cast. Oh my god, the cast. Absolute excellence. The film is set to star Saoirse Ronan as Jo March, Emma Watson as Meg, Florence Pugh as Amy, Eliza Scanlen as Beth, Laura Dern as Marmee, Timothée Chalamet as Laurie, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March. This is a cast overflowing with talent. Saoirse is a 3 time Oscar nominee at 25, Timothée an Oscar nominee at 23, Laura Dern a 2 time nominee, and Meryl Streep is a 21 time nominee and 3 time Oscar winner. There is no question that this film will excel in the acting department. Timothée and Saoirse have already proven to be a fantastic team and have palpable chemistry, thanks to 2017's Lady Bird also written and directed by Greta Gerwig. Greta seems to have outdone herself again with this film and is coming for the awards season. The film is an obvious play towards a nomination with a release date on Christmas. However, with a release date so late in the season Little Women will miss the opportunity to clinch other nominations, such as the Golden Globes. That being said, Little Women will not run the festival circuit either, ensuring it will have no shot at other essential awards. Eleven of the thirteen Oscar experts at Gold Derby have Little Women on their list for Best Picture.
This movie has all the makings of a hit, but only time will tell. The only thing I can find to complain about is that the cinematography didn't match up to my initial expectations. Either way, Little Women is one to watch.
