Last night the highly anticipated Pretty Little Liars spinoff, The Perfectionists premiered. It brought back two original PLL cast members, Sasha Pieterse as Allison DiLaurentis and Janel Parrish as Mona Vanderwaal. Allison is joining the staff at Beacon Heights University, but was she hired for the wrong reasons?
Shortly before Allison arrived a young girl, Taylor Hotchkiss (Hayley Erin) killed herself. The Hotchkiss family was very instrumental in the founding of the University, their pretentious son Nolan (Chris Mason) attends and is in Allison's class. As the episode goes on we find out that Allison could be Taylor's doppelgänger, and in true Pretty Little Liars fashion that Taylor is actually alive.
Allison, being the person that she is, latches onto Nolan's group of friends and begins involving herself. You can see from the beginning that Nolan is not a good person and is very manipulative towards his "friends", threatening to expose various secrets if his get out. Allison catches onto this and starts asking questions that she probably didn't want the answer to. One of her students and Nolan's friend Caitlin (Syndey Park) even admits to her she has her own fantasies about "getting rid of someone". As the episode nears to a close, his friends meet in the woods and discuss how much easier their lives would be if Nolan was dead. It came as no shock that just two minutes after that, Nolan was impaled on a fence.
That was a "shock factor" and would have been the perfect way to end off, but once again this is Pretty Little Liars. Mona goes into the bathroom and looks into the mirror and starts speaking to it asking if "this is their fault?". The camera zooms out onto a gigantic control room with people and tons of cameras covering every inch of BHU, including Mona in the mirror.
I'm so excited to see where this goes, they always do a good job of building up a mystery, I just hope we end up with a satisfying pay-off. I think they had the perfect balance of the old character arcs and the new ones. I look forward to watching next week and really getting to know these clearly complex characters. I can already tell that the acting is good, especially by Sofia Carson who plays Ava. I think if they keep on the right track the show could be something special.
