1. Beautiful Boy

This is based on the real life true story of father and son David and Nic Sheff. The story is about David dealing with his sons meth addiction. The portrayal by both Timothée Chalamet and Steve Carell is heartbreakingly stunning. In my opinion, this was the best movie of the year and while I can see where it wasn't best picture worthy, the acting deserved a nod. Timothée Chalamet lost 18 pounds for this role and gave a jaw-dropping, tear-jerking performance. This movie is available through Amazon Prime
2. Eighth Grade

This movie so accurately depicted and captured the awkwardness and anxiety of going through 8th grade that it's actually scary. The story is about a 13-year old girl, Kayla just trying to survive her 8th grade year and dive into high school. When watching it you feel every single inch of second hand embarrassment, it makes you uncomfortable and that's what is so good about it. You feel grateful that you're no longer in middle school watching this. The acting done by all parts especially Elsie Fisher (Kayla) deserves nothing but praise. Bo Burnham in his directorial debut really hit the nail on the head. This movie is available for purchase on Amazon, Youtube, Vudu, and Google Play.
3. Boy Erased

Once again, a heartbreaking true story. The movie is about a young man, Jared, who is outed as gay to his Baptist pastor father and mother. They struggle to come to terms with this revelation and send Jared to a conversion therapy. The movie is from Jared's perspective and shows what really went on inside the conversion therapy and the complex relationships built with his parents. Lucas Hedges (Jared), most known for being in several other Oscar nominated movies like Manchester By the Sea and Lady Bird, really knocked this performance out of the park. He made you feel the pain and anguish he was going through and really made you form an emotional connection to the movie. This movie is available to purchase on Amazon, Vudu, Google Play, and Youtube.
4. Mid90s

While I can see why this movie missed the Oscar bar by a smidge, I still really enjoyed it. The story follows 13-year old Stevie trying to navigate new found friendships with an older group of skaters and a difficult home life. Some high-schoolers take Stevie under their wing and give him an escape through skateboarding, but also you have to wonder if they're really the best influences. The most complex relationship in the movie comes between Stevie and his brother Ian, coincidentally played by Lucas Hedges. This movie is really just fun to watch with a lot of comedic elements, stemming from writer and director Jonah Hill. This movie perfectly sets the tone of the "mid 90s" and gets everything right. This movie is available for purchase on Amazon, Vudu, Google Play, and Youtube.
5. Hereditary

I literally cannot find a single reason that this movie was snubbed aside from the fact that the Academy hates horror films. I don't even know how to describe this film without giving anything away, in my opinion, it's best to go in blind. I am personally not a very big fan of horror, but I have to give credit where credit is due. You will be filled with anxiety the whole time you watch and will be so engulfed you'll feel like a fly on the wall in these people's lives. What really propelled this movie to greatness was the fantastic acting particularly by Alex Wolff and Toni Colette. Alex Wolff went all out for his performance in this and made the character so believable. Now, Toni Colette, her performance absolutely, no doubt should have been nominated for Best Actress. I would even go as far to say she should've won. I don't want to give anything away but her performance is so incredible it will blow you away. This movie is available for purchase on Amazon, Vudu, Google Play, and Youtube.
