On Friday, the live-action remake of Dumbo came out and I couldn't wait to see it. It had been probably over 10 years since I watched the original so I was very excited to see it. Not only was it much sadder than I remember, but the production value on this movie blew me away.

From the get-go I knew to expect greatness knowing it was Disney and also that Tim Burton directed it. I was expecting it too be visually stunning, but it took that to a whole other level. Every single shot was gorgeous. The colors, there's not enough I can say about the colors in this movie. I particularly noticed it within the first ten or so minutes. They had a beautiful shot of a vibrant pink and purple sky with the silhouettes of the characters and I was sitting in my seat just thinking "wow". Whoever did the recoloring on this needs to have their name out there, I couldn't find it with a google search. Also the design of the CGI "Dreamland" is heart-stopping. It draws the eye in and evokes your imagination. Everything meshes together so beautifully. The film has received some backlash for "non-realistic looking CGI" but if it was realistic the movie wouldn't be half of what it is. Disney is known for their imaginative stories so it's ridiculous to critic it for not looking realistic.

It was also so much more upsetting watching this movie now than I remember. Watching the connection between Dumbo and Milly (Nico Parker) was gut-wrenching. They seemed to bond over both losing their mothers and it was devastating watching Milly try to communicate to her father, Holt (Colin Farrel), how much she missed her deceased mother through Dumbo's emotion of missing his mother. From basically the first scene it had me crying when Holt, returned from the war missing his arm. There was so much sadness in this movie but led to a bittersweet payoff. I really loved the few full-circle moments they included, but one really stuck out to me. In the beginning when Dumbo first entered the circus he was named "Baby Jumbo", the cart they wheeled him in one was labeled, "Dear Baby Jumbo". Once Dumbo's ears were exposed chaos erupted and the "J" fell off while the "D" fell down taking its place, deeming him Dumbo. At the end of the film, when Dumbo is escaping and Dreamland is burning to the ground at the epic climax, they focus of the arched "Dreamland" sign for a few seconds. In that time, the "D" falls off to the ground. I really loved that they included that moment as well as many others.

Overall, I really enjoyed this movie and can't stop thinking about the visuals. What do you think of the movie? Leave a comment below!
