Booksmart is a film about "Academic overachievers Amy and Molly thought keeping their noses to the grindstone gave them a leg up on their high school peers. But on the eve of graduation, the best friends suddenly realize that they may have missed out on the special moments of their teenage years. Determined to make up for lost time, the girls decide to cram four years of not-to-be missed fun into one night -- a chaotic adventure that no amount of book smarts could prepare them for." The film stars Kaitlyn Dever as Amy and Beanie Feldstein as Molly and is directed by the wickedly talented Olivia Wilde.
More often then not when watching a movie about girls in high school you get over the top stereotypes and a sub-par movie that you feel like you've seen a million times. However, this movie broke away from all of that and I think it's because not only was it directed by a woman, but written by mostly women. It gave a real feel as to what girls in high school are like and not what men think they're like. It was raw and real. Another thing I really liked was that it didn't try to hard to be awkward and quirky, but it portrayed the awkwardness of high school with ease. There also wasn't a single character who didn't have multiple well thought out layers to them. It portrayed the realities of high school in a way I've only seen in one other film, Lady Bird, which coincidentally was also written and directed by a woman and stars Beanie Feldstein as well. The most important thing about this was that it featured a main character, Amy, who was gay, but that wasn't her only personality trait and the story wasn't centered around that. It was refreshing to see characters written in this way, and I wouldn't have even known from the trailer or until it was presented which is often not the case.
Overall, this movie is extremely well done and I hope it gets the recognition it deserves. I would encourage everyone to go see this movie and show it love. It's the best movie I've seen so far in 2019.
